“If CAD occurred earlier, then we would not have seen CNC Machining” Ralph starts off the conversation - although CNC’s finishes are incredible, and it can enable small features at fine tolerance levels.
Ralph shares that we need to invest more into education, from youth to entrepreneurs. In today’s system, there is a lack of proper training. Ralph touts about the benefits of local trade schools, and how some summer programs that taught kids how to do CNC programming, milling, drilling and turning - and In 2 weeks, they were able to teach these kids CAD software, flow simulation and how to program CAD driven CNC machines. There was one girl he remembers well, and describes how the teacher threw her the manual for an EDM machine, and within a few days, she was able to program it.
Kids can learn to do anything. Manufacturing can really benefit from having youth get more involved. If these kids are immersed in playing video games, then start designing and developing video games, you’ll probably get one hell of an additive manufacturing programmer. He looks forward to seeing how kids immersed in 3D can fuel their capabilities.
Considering that Ralph never finished his college degree and still had a colorful career by becoming the CTO of Extrude Hones and ExOne - and later founded NCDMM and America Makes - he still believes that hundred him and put him 20 years behind his cohort. With the power of networking, he developed a network of mentors he could genuinely tap into.
Ralph looks forward to emerging technologies that will enable improved simulation and metrology. Statistical process control will play a role in driving actionable insights. By collecting data off a myriad of electronics, equipment with MTConnect - this will deprive data that can drive productivity.
As we move into Industry 5.0, we expect that organizations can stream data off the shop floor and introduce programs to interpret them.
‘Digital Thread’ essentially defines Industry 4.0. This will lay the foundation for Industry 5.0, where we can graphically display information and turn that knowledge into wisdom.
